About Albion Park
Albion Park is a suburb located in the Macquarie Valley within the City of Shellharbour, New South Wales, Australia. It lies approximately 18 kilometers south of Wollongong's central business district (CBD). Surrounding suburbs include Calderwood to the north, Tullimbar to the west, and Croom to the east. As of 2021, Albion Park had a population of 13,826 residents.
History of Albion Park
The area now known as Albion Park was originally granted to Samuel Terry in 1821, who established the Terry's Meadows Estate, primarily operating as a cattle stud. Following Terry's death in 1838, his nephew, John Terry Hughes, inherited the estate and renamed it Albion Park. The name "Albion" is an ancient term for Great Britain.
The township developed at the crossroads of routes from Wollongong and the timber-rich areas of Calderwood and Tongarra, leading to the port at Shellharbour. The arrival of the railway in 1887 and the completion of the road through Macquarie Pass to the Southern Highlands further spurred the town's growth.
