About Oak Flats
Oak Flats is a suburb located approximately 21 kilometers south of Wollongong's central business district, within the City of Shellharbour in New South Wales, Australia. It is bordered by Albion Park Rail to the west, Mount Warrigal to the east, and Blackbutt to the north. As of the 2021 Census, Oak Flats had a population of 6,840 residents.
History of Oak Flats
The area now known as Oak Flats was first explored by George Bass and Matthew Flinders in 1796. In 1821, army officer John Horsley received a 1,200-acre land grant on the southern shores of Lake Illawarra, known as the 'Oak Flats Run,' which he used for cattle grazing.
Development as a suburb began in 1925 with the establishment of the Lake Illawarra Township Estate, followed by the Kembla Vista and Panorama Estates.

While Oak Flats is primarily a residential area, it offers several recreational facilities. The suburb is situated on the southwestern shores of Lake Illawarra, providing opportunities for water-based activities. Central Park is a popular spot for families, offering open spaces and playgrounds.
For sports enthusiasts, there are cricket grounds such as Shane Lee Oval and Geoff Shaw Oval, as well as soccer fields like Keith Bond Oval. The nearby Shellharbour City Centre, approximately 5 kilometers away, features shopping centers, cinemas, and dining options.
