About Balgownie
Balgownie is a suburb located approximately 5 kilometers northwest of Wollongong's Central Business District (CBD) in New South Wales, Australia. It is bordered by the suburbs of Tarrawanna and Fernhill to the north, Fairy Meadow to the east, and Mount Pleasant and Mount Ousley to the south. As of the 2021 Census, Balgownie had a population of 5,722 residents.
History of Balgownie
The name "Balgownie" is believed to have been derived from either the Scottish town of Balgownie or the Balgownie Bridge over the River Don in Aberdeen, Scotland. The area was originally inhabited by Aboriginal communities who spoke a variant of the Dharawal language. European settlement began with a land grant to John Buckland in 1835, who named his 1,920-acre property "Balgownie."
The discovery of coal in 1861 led to the establishment of the Mount Pleasant Coal Mine, attracting workers and fostering the development of the suburb. The first post office opened in 1889, with Robert Edgar serving as the inaugural postmaster.
