About Corrimal
Corrimal is a suburb located approximately 6 kilometres north of Wollongong's Central Business District (CBD) in New South Wales, Australia. It is bordered by Russell Vale to the north, Bellambi to the northeast, East Corrimal to the east, Tarrawanna to the southwest, Fernhill to the south, and Towradgi to the southeast. As of the 2021 Census, Corrimal had a population of 6,972 residents.
History of Corrimal
The name "Corrimal" is derived from "Kurumul," an Aboriginal term referring to a Dreamtime warrior. European settlement began in 1839 when a 50-acre land grant was made to Hugh Kennedy. The area was initially known for logging, but the establishment of the Corrimal Colliery in 1883 by Thomas Bertram marked the beginning of significant mining activities.
The Corrimal railway station opened in 1887, facilitating coal transportation. The suburb also became notable for being the birthplace of Streets Ice Cream in the 1930s.
