Fairy Meadow is a suburb located approximately 4 kilometers north of Wollongong`s Central Business District (CBD) in New South Wales, Australia. It is bordered by the suburbs of Balgownie to the west, Towradgi to the north, and Mount Ousley to the south. As of the 2021 Census, Fairy Meadow had a population of 7,512 residents.Â
The area now known as Fairy Meadow was originally inhabited by the Dharawal people. European settlement began in the early 19th century, with the region being referred to as "Para Meadow" due to its well-grassed lands attracting cattlemen.Â
The Mount Pleasant Coal Mine opened in 1861, drawing miners to the area. The mine operated a private railway line to transport coal to Wollongong until the Fairy Meadow railway station was opened in 1887.
Fairy Meadow offers several attractions for visitors. Fairy Meadow Beach is a popular destination for families, featuring a children`s playground and picnic facilities. The nearby Science Space, located at the University of Wollongong`s Innovation Campus, provides interactive exhibits suitable for children.
