About Farmborough Heights
Farmborough Heights is a suburb located approximately 9 kilometers southwest of Wollongong's central business district (CBD) in New South Wales, Australia. It is bordered by suburbs such as Unanderra to the east, Cordeaux Heights to the northeast, and Kembla Grange to the south and west. As of the 2021 Census, the population of Farmborough Heights was 4,179 residents.
History of Farmborough Heights
The area now known as Farmborough Heights was originally inhabited by Aboriginal communities who were the Traditional Custodians of the Illawarra land, speaking a variant of the Dharawal language. The suburb's name derives from "Farmborough," reflecting its early use as farmland. Historically, the area comprised three separate farms, each with its own farmhouse, which still stand today.
These farmhouses are located on Silvertop, Farmborough Road (approximately 300 meters from the general store), and just east of Coachwood Drive. Over time, these farmlands were subdivided to accommodate residential development.
