Wollongong is a coastal city located approximately 80 kilometers south of Wollongong`s Central Business District (CBD). It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west. As of the 2021 Census, the Wollongong metropolitan area had a population of 305,691 people.
The area now known as Wollongong was originally inhabited by the Dharawal people, who have lived in the region for thousands of years. The name "Wollongong" is believed to derive from the Aboriginal word "woolyungah," meaning "five islands."Â
European settlement began in 1815 when Dr. Charles Throsby established the first cattle station in the area. The first postal office opened in 1832, and the railway reached Wollongong in 1887, facilitating further development.Â
