About Mount Kembla
Mount Kembla is a suburb situated within the City of Wollongong, New South Wales, approximately 10 kilometers west of Wollongong's central business district. It is bordered by suburbs such as Figtree to the northeast, Cordeaux Heights to the east, and Kembla Heights to the west. According to the 2021 Census, Mount Kembla has a population of 1,083 residents.
History of Mount Kembla
The name "Mount Kembla" is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "plenty of game." The area was originally inhabited by the Dharawal people. European settlement began in the 19th century, with the establishment of the Mount Kembla Colliery in 1883 marking a significant development. The Mount Kembla Post Office opened on 22 February 1898.
The primary industry was coal mining, which attracted workers and led to the development of the township. The Mount Kembla Mine disaster of 1902, where 96 people lost their lives, remains a significant event in the suburb's history.
