About Thirroul
Thirroul is a northern seaside suburb of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, situated approximately 13 kilometers north of the Wollongong Central Business District (CBD) and about 73 kilometers south of Wollongong. It is nestled between the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west, with neighboring suburbs including Austinmer to the north and Bulli to the south.
History of Thirroul
Before European settlement, the area now known as Thirroul was inhabited for at least 20,000 years by the Wodiwodi people, a subgroup of the Dharawal nation. The name "Thirroul" is derived from the local Aboriginal word for "valley of the cabbage tree palms."
European settlers arrived in the 1860s, engaging in activities such as farming, cedar logging, whaling, and fruit growing. The Bulli Mine opened in 1859, marking the beginning of coal mining in the area.
The township was initially known as North Bulli until February 1880, when it was renamed Robbinsville after Frederick Robbins, a prominent local resident. The rail link with Wollongong was completed in 1888, spurring population growth and tourism. In 1922, English author D.H. Lawrence stayed in Thirroul and wrote the novel "Kangaroo" during his visit.
